Categories

Organize your recipes and ingredients with color-coded categories for quick filtering and browsing.

Overview

Categories help you organize recipes and ingredients into logical groups. Each category has a name, an optional description, and a color for visual identification.

Categories are organization-wide — every team member sees and can use the same set of categories. You can assign multiple categories to a single recipe.

Creating Categories

1
Navigate to Categories

Click Categories in the sidebar to open the categories page.

2
Click New Category

Click the New Category button in the top-right corner.

3
Enter a name

Type a descriptive name for your category (e.g., “Desserts”, “Sauces”, “Dairy”).

4
Pick a color

Choose a hex color that will be used as the category badge color throughout the app. Pick distinct colors for easy visual scanning.

5
Save

Click Save to create the category. It will immediately be available for use in recipes and ingredients.

Using Categories

Assign categories when creating or editing a recipe. Open the recipe form and select one or more categories from the Category dropdown.

On the Recipes page, use the category filter to quickly narrow down your recipe list. Click a category badge to filter, or use the dropdown to select multiple categories.

Categories are also useful for ingredients. Grouping ingredients by type (Produce, Dairy, Meat, Spices) makes it easier to find what you need and keeps your ingredient list organized.

Tips

Plan Your Categories First

Create your categories before adding recipes. This saves time and keeps your organization consistent from the start.

Here are some common category structures to get you started:

  • Restaurant — Starters, Mains, Desserts, Sides, Sauces, Beverages, Specials
  • Household — Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snacks, Baking, Drinks, Meal Prep

You can rename or change a category's color at any time. All recipes and ingredients using that category will update automatically.
